     ELECTORAL REGISTERS:

Electoral registers have been produced since the Representation of the People Act 1832 and are a valuable tool in family history. Prior to 1832 the franchise was solely the privilege of the wealthy landowners. Until 2002 the registers were produced in one full publication but following a court ruling in 2001 legislation was introduced whereby two versions of the registers were published - a full edition for official purposes and a copy without the names of those who wished to opt-out from having their names sold by local councils to commercial concerns.

The following electoral registers are available as an aid to research. Those up to and including 2002 are no longer subject to the Data Protection Act 1998 as they are now 10 years old. Those of a later date are the edited versions and don't contain names of those who chose to opt-out. Irrespective of the date of publication I have a duty to use this resource in a fair and lawful manner as outlined in the Data Protection Act.
